Moms, It’s Time To Get Comfortable With Making Mistakes

Part of being a mom is messing up, and that’s okay. In fact, it’s way better than okay.

I’ve done so many things wrong.

The time I took him out of the car and looked down and saw that his seat wasn’t even buckled in. I thought, so irresponsible, how could I let that happen?

The time I had him in the baby carrier while cooking and hot oil splattered up so close to his face and I thought, what are you doing having him so close to the stove?

The time I sat him up on the floor because I wanted to snap a cute photo, but he fell backwards before I could catch him and he hit his head hard on the ground. I thought, that was so selfish and careless

Leaning In to Vulnerability

The refusal to be vulnerable is exhausting AF.

I spent so many years of my life not willing to be vulnerable. I didn’t realize it at the time. To me, I was just being strong.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
Don’t show those big bad emotions.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Smile & be positive.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Don’t let anyone worry.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ You’ll cause stress. Don’t show your struggles.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ You don’t need help.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ You shouldn’t feel this way.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

It’s a defense mechanism. Self-protection, really. If I can guard myself (and others) from these “negative” emotions, if I can ignore them, they’ll go away and I won’t have to feel them. It’s better, safer, easier, we tell ourselves.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Okay buckle up beeeaches, this is a long one! There’s tons of lists out there of baby must-haves or baby essentials for the first year. The problem is, they say things like “you need a swaddle” and when you go to get one, you realize there’s 20 different kinds to choose from and they all just look like a wad of fabric and you have no direction so you end up getting none or getting all 20. Or, maybe you’re in the wtf is a swaddle boat…either way!

Some days are great. Being at home with our little family of 3 (and by that I mean 4, sorry Wes🐶 !) is wonderful. Soaking up this unexpected time we have together, working on our house, enjoying the weather, cooking new things, watching our little man grow up before our eyes. It’s not time you can get back so in many ways it’s such a blessing. Our little cocoon is safe and comfortable.⁣⁣⁣

Learn to love your messes

Your friendly reminder that this is what’s going on much of my days over here…⁣

For such a tiny human he makes a lottt of messes.⁣

The thing is, we post what we choose to post. Do I choose to post cute, well-put-together-looking baby pictures (a lot)? Yes! And I’m good with that. Are most of our days also puke-covered, food-crusted, and diaper-changing-disaster-filled? Ohh yes.⁣

Motherhood Unfiltered: A raw look at the fourth trimester

A couple weeks after giving birth a friend told me, “You’re making this look easy…this is false advertising!”⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And she’s right. Becoming a mom – especially the first days when everything is unknown and different, and you’re all exhausted and emotional – isn’t easy. We chose to spend the first 5 days alone, and it was a complete blur yet somehow I remember it vividly.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It wasn’t just about cute newborn pics. It was raw as heck. Emotionally, physically, everything-lly.⁣⁣

The hurts of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day Post 2 of 2

Here’s the thing…

Mother’s Day has never been a particularly hard day for me.

This year is pure happiness as the first with our son here. Last year I knew I was pregnant and was excited by that, looking forward to the day he would be here. Any year before that was spent celebrating my love for my own mother and all the other wonderful moms in my life.

I know this is not the case for so many people.
